Quick
'n Easy Training, Give Curling A Try!
We
welcome new curlers – come and give curling a
try . The Potomac Curling Club offers FREE instruction
from 6:30 to 7:15 on most Thursday evenings. We also
offer the same FREE instruction early Saturday mornings.
Please check our Thursday
drop-in page or our Saturday
Breakfast League page for
more information. After the instruction (did we mention
it was FREE?), on a space available basis, there is
the opportunity to curl with more experienced curlers
in the regular league play. We ask non-members that
want to curl in the pick-up game for a nominal $10
donation. Please bring warm, loose -fitting clothes
and clean flat soled shoes. Sneakers are OK. A hat
and gloves make a warm addition. In addition to the
instruction, we provide all necessary equipment. If
you decide to stay for the game, you'll be teamed up
with more experienced curlers that can help you learn
the ropes.
For
more information on the Thursday Night Drop-In League,
contact our Thursday league coordinator
Charlie
Jennings for more information.
Learn-to-Curl
Programs
Never
curled before? No problem, it's easy to get started.
The Potomac Curling Club’s Learn-to-Curl programs
are the way to go and recommended for all new members.
For our 2007-08 season we will be teaching two
single three hour sessions designed to build on skills
learned during an open house or a drop-in mini lesson.
If you have not been to an open house or drop-in session, no problems, we'll
be covering the basics too. Certified instructors will
help you get up to speed and in the game quickly and
safely. All you have to bring is determination, warm
clothes (gloves), a good sense of humor, and clean,
rubber-soled shoes – we’ll
provide the rest.
Learn-to-Curl
- The Basics
The
Learn-to-Curl program covers safety on ice, how to
deliver a stone, sweeping, and some of the terminology
used to describe different aspects of the game – such
as the "take out," "the draw," and “hurry.” The
instructors will demonstrate and work one-on-one with
each curler reviewing the essentials of the game. You
will also learn the rules, scoring, the roles of each
player on a curling team, basic strategy, and practice
making key shots. We will also emphasize the on- and
off-ice etiquette that makes curling a gracious sport.
