About curling:

Curling has been an Olympic sport since 1998 with the U.S. fielding both men’s and women’s teams. Good sportsmanship is engrained into play with international rules specifically referencing “The Spirit of Curling.” Though primarily a winter sport, curling is played in more than 40 states and is spreading to warmer climates with the growth of indoor ice facilities. The U.S. is home to approximately 16,000 curlers and 165 clubs. The East Coast now boasts close to 4,000 curlers, and is one of the fasting-growing centers of U.S. curling. Potomac Curling Club was founded in 1961 and has 250 members from MD, VA, DC and PA. More information is available at

Interesting curling facts:

• Curling is commonly referred to as “chess on ice” because of the high degree of strategy involved.

• Curling is a Scottish game with written history dating to 1541.

• Scottish immigrants brought the game to the U.S. around 1832.

• Curling arrived in the Washington-Baltimore area more than 50 years ago when Potomac Curling Club was founded (in 1961).

• Almost all curling stones are fashioned of granite from the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig. Each stone weighs about 42 pounds.

• San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis — football standout at Dunbar High School (DC) and University of Maryland — is an avid curler. He will serve as the Honorary Team Captain for the U.S. Olympic Curling Team in Sochi.
